Grading 1: 10th Kup – 9th Kup | White Belt to White/Yellow Belt

On this Page, you will find all the information you will learn as a White Belt and will also be required for you to pass your First Grading/Examination [10th Kup to 9th Kup | White Belt to White/Yellow Belt]

New Kicks:

1. Roundhouse Kick

The Roundhouse Kick is the first Kick you will learn. Steps Required:

  1. Lift back knee straight up
  2. Rotate standing foot 90 degrees while turning your hips sideways
  3. Extend the leg out for the kick while rotating your standing foot another 90 degrees
  4. Bend your knee back after the kick and land the foot in front or back to original fighting stance

Foot Position on Contact: Toes should be pointing forward and you should hit with the flat top of the foot. For the Traditional Technique, you should hook your foot around to kick with the ball of the foot, so your foot will be sideways.

2. Front/Lead Leg Kick

The Front/Lead Leg Kick is very similar to the Roundhouse Kick. There are 2 variations of this kick. One is a Skipping Technique and the other is a very Direct Kick. Steps Required:

Type 1: Direct Kick

  1. Lift your knee up in chamber
  2. Slide forward with the standing foot
  3. Extend the knee out to kick while rotating the standing foot 180 degrees
  4. Put the kicking foot down in front to return to fighting stance

Type 2: Skipping Technique

  1. Back foot comes towards the front foot and at the same time the front knee comes up into chamber
  2. Extend the knee out to kick while rotating the standing foot 180 degrees
  3. Put the kicking foot down in front to return to fighting stance

Foot Position on Contact: Toes should be pointing forward and you should hit with the flat top of the foot. For the Traditional Technique, you should hook your foot around to kick with the ball of the foot, so your foot will be sideways.

3. Push Kick

The Push Kick is the easiest Kick you will learn. Steps Required:

  1. Lift your knee straight up
  2. Extend leg and kick with the ball of the foot
  3. Bring the knee back and put your foot down in front or behind

Foot Position on Contact: For sparring, you should kick with the whole of the bottom of the foot so your foot will be flat. For the  Traditional Technique, you should kick with the ball of the foot.

4. Inwards Crescent Kick

The Inwards Crescent Kick makes the shape of a Crescent when executed. Steps Required:

  1. Lift back knee straight up
  2. Swing your knee while extending your leg in from outwards to inwards
  3. The movement of the kick can be described as adduction of the hips
  4. After the kick has passed the target, bend your leg and bring it back to the ground

Foot Position on Contact: Your foot should be facing straight up and you’ll make contact with the inside of your foot.

Note: Inwards Crescent Kick Tutorial ends at 1min19secs and moves onto the Outwards Crescent Kick Tutorial which is not required for White Belts. Requirement is valid for the next belt.

5. Axe Kick

An Axe Kick is similar to swinging an Axe but your just using your leg. Steps Required:

  1. Lift your knee straight up into chamber position
  2. Swing your leg up to height above your opponents head
  3. Swing your leg down with good force to hit the target
  4. Then bring your leg down in front or behind to return to fighting stance

Foot Position: Hit the target with the bottom of the foot for sparring but the Traditional Technique is to use the heel of the foot.

New Movement:

1. Switching

Switching is when you have for example your right leg forward in a fighting stance and you want to change legs so that your left leg is in front instead. So instead of stepping forward or back to put the other leg forward you will jump up slightly off the ground without jumping too high and mid-air you will change/switch legs. The result is you’ll be in the exact same spot but with the other leg in front instead, this is Switching.

New Pattern:

No New Pattern Required for White Belts. New Pattern will be required for the next belt, see next Page for more info

  3. Horse-Riding Stance
  4. Back Stance
  5. Long Stance
  6. Short/Walking Stance
  7. Cat/Tiger Stance
  8. Crane Stance
  9. Cross Stance
  10. ‘L’ Stance

Note: There are no new stances even for Black Belts so there are only these 10.

3. One for One Kicking

‘One for One Kicking’ is when there are 2 Partners together facing each other in fighting stance with their guard up.

One Person will kick towards their Partner [without touching, just missing]. The Person kicking should keep in mind where their Partners head and body height is and they should demonstrate their understanding by executing their kicks to the correct target areas/heights.

Once Partner 1 has kicked, Partner 2 will kick straight away, and again Partner 1 will kick and the process will just carry on until the Instructor says to stop. Typically, the exercise will last maximum for 1 minute and then you’ll repeat the exercise a few times with other people during your Grading.
