Taekwondo Lessons are split into two types:
(1) Sport Taekwondo which is the Olympic side of Taekwondo in which students learn the different Taekwondo kicks, movement/footwork and other components of Sport Taekwondo to do Sparring. Sparring is where students use their skills on an opponent to better their fighting ability and understanding. After a lot practice and experience, students can then participate in Competitions to test their skills against others nationally.
Over time, Students will start to understand the tactical side of sparring and they can start to fight Internationally against fighters around the world. This can be followed onto European and World Championships as well as the Olympics if athletes are selected for the GB Team. GB Taekwondo provide various pathway program’s for athletes to be selected to represent them.
(2) Traditional Taekwondo which is about the Taekwondo belts. Students will learn different striking and blocking techniques, patterns (poomsae) and other drills required of them to progress through each belt. Gradings (examinations) will happen 3 to 4 times a year and students will be able to participate in them once they are ready. If students are successful, they will be promoted to the next belt and continue with this process until they reach the black belt.
Some students will only do the traditional side while most will do both as they go hand in hand.
